Commodities

Corn wheat soybean

Bill Gates Just Bought $571 Million of This Stock
Anytime Bill Gates snaps up a stock like there’s no tomorrow, investors should pay attention. Gates, since retiring from full-time duties as co-founder and chairman of Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT), has devoted most of his time to running the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which supports worthy causes and innovations around the world. But Gates has also been actively at work selling his massive stake in Microsoft and diversifying into other stocks through his investment firm, Cascade Investment, LLC. Couple this with the fact that he’s often known to take a hint or two from his fellow-billionaire buddy Warren Buffett, and you have ample reason to keep tabs on his stock purchases.
Recently, Gates made a series of purchases of a stock I’m sure you’ve heard of — Deere & Co. (NYSE: DE), the world’s largest farm equipment manufacturer, a leader in the production of equipment and machinery for the construction and forestry industries, and a top producer of lawn and garden tractors for homeowners. Gates has made purchases of about 7.5 million shares worth about $571 million.
The purchases, made during the past couple months, increased his position to 24.5 million shares (worth just shy of $2 billion), giving him an ownership stake of nearly 6%.
After I examined the stock’s fundamentals, it was easy to see why Gates would want to load up on the shares.
It’s a good value, trading at less than 13 times trailing 12-month earnings compared with the industry average price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 14.5. The stock’s P/E ratio is also well below the five-year average of 18.4. Its forward P/E ratio of 11 is also very reasonable.
For the next five years, analysts estimate revenue will rise at a solid 8.5% pace overall, but expect foreign sales to grow twice as fast as domestic sales — an increasingly common theme as the developing world continues to blossom. Emerging markets with large populations such as China and India should account for most of the foreign sales growth. As these countries have advanced economically, their demand for food has risen both in terms of quantity and quality. So Deere & Co. plans to ramp-up sales of farm equipment in these countries in response to the increased demand.
Construction equipment should also sell briskly in developing countries, particularly China, the world’s largest and fastest-growing market for construction equipment. On Dec. 15, 2010, Deere & Co. announced one of its latest initiatives to capitalize on this — a $50 million construction equipment factory in northern China. The factory is slated to begin operations in the summer of 2012.
Risks to consider: Deere & Co. has considerable exposure to the ailing U.S. housing market through its construction equipment business, where sales could suffer if the housing market were to worsen significantly. Also, further expansion into foreign markets could be difficult. In India, for instance, it could be years before Deere & Co. can establish an adequate market for its more profitable large tractors (those with more than 50 horsepower). Instead, it may end up having to settle for selling much less profitable smaller machines.

Jim Rogers is an author, financial commentator and successful international investor. He has been frequently featured in Time, The New York Times, Barron’s, Forbes, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times and is a regular guest on Bloomberg and CNBC.
The Price Of A Commodity Will Never Go To Zero. you’re not buying a piece of paper that says you own an intangible piece of company that can go bankrupt
Investing: Bottoms End In 10 or 15 Year Lows
The Only Areas Of The World Economy I See That Are Going To Be Dynamic Are Natural Resources
Don’t Get An MBA, Go And Get A Farming Degree
Well, governments are printing money again. It’s a wrong thing to do but that’s all they know to do. So between shortages of supply and money printing, if you want to be in the dynamic parts of the world economy, don’t get an MBA and go to Wall Street, go and get a farming degree and move to Asia.
We Have Huge Shortages Developing In Agriculture
Asia Is Where The Energy And The Dynamism Are
The largest creditor nations in the world now, are China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore. Those are all Asian countries. This is where the assets are. This is where the energy is, the dynamism is. You know who the debtors are and where they are.
The 21st Century Is The Century Of Asia
ยุคของ ASIA แล้ว
The only areas of the world economy I see that are going to be dynamic are natural resources; farming is going to be one of the best professions of the next 10 or 20 or 30 years.
One Of The Best Investments In The World Will Be Farmland
I Don’t Think We Ever Left The First Recession

In the last days the European Central Bank [ECB] has said that they will purchase Portugese, Irish, Spanish and Italian government debt. The amounts were not specified. This is the beginning of European QE.
( แทรก Bundesbank director 多姆布雷特 said Wednesday that recent U.S. case of tight money market, the financial crisis is far from the peak level.
He also European Central Bank’s purchase of government bonds issued by ruthless measures of explicit criticism.
多姆布雷特 said the United States to whom the money market fund for the selection becomes more critical, while the European bankers are not currently facing similar funding after Lehman bankruptcy tight situation.
Both U.S. political parties should pay attention to the following; there will be a depressed U.S. economy when the elections occur in November 2012.

How To Invest In The Short-Term
1. Own gold and foreign non U.S. currencies with a future: Chinese renminbi, Swiss franc, Canadian dollar, Brazilian, and possibly the Singaporean, Australian, and the New Zealand currencies.
Today, even the slowest have realized that gold is money and that currencies are only paper backed by the rationality and goodwill of the political process in each individual nation.
2. Short European bank stocks.
short แบงก์ในยุโรป
3. Buy the following on dips and when fear of economic collapse increases: gold, oil, and food grains (and companies that support their production).
4. China and India are the future economic powerhouses of the world. Brazil could join them if President Rousseff follows the productive example led by President Lula. On dips in the markets caused by fear of global economic collapse, buy China, India, and the countries that supply them with raw materials.
5. Follow the Guild Basic Needs IndexTM to see what is really happening to the buying power of the dollar.
How To Invest Now In The Long-Term
1. When a new bail out of financial markets on a grand scale is attempted, buy stocks in Europe and the U.S. for a trade…in our opinion, they may rise for a few months.
2. When the U.S. dollar is devalued in one large increment, buy U.S. stocks …they will fly.
“To see things in the seed, that is genius”

The seed of the current crisis has been growing and ripening for decades. Let us pay tribute to those wise people like Jim Sinclair and Harry Schultz who identified the seeds of this current turmoil long ago.

Financial Times, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the Economist, Barrons, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Forbes, and Investors Business Daily

Uncertainty — A Drag on the U.S. Economy
One thing is becoming quite certain in the current U.S. economy: uncertainty.
In conversation after conversation with CEOs, we are hearing a similar litany of frustration. They want to expand business, hire more employees, and procure more equipment. All such undertakings would obviously help the economy. However, they are afraid to follow through because of three major uncertainties:
1. Uncertainty about the gridlock in Washington.
We are smack in the middle of a prolonged dogfight between ideologues on the left and the right of the political spectrum. The warfare almost kept the debt ceiling from expanding, which could have resulted in the U.S. default on it’s obligations.
Business leaders are expressing their exasperation. They wonder: what ever happened to compromise and moderation? How can anything be accomplished with polar opposites at war with one another, locked in stifling political discord that causes economic growth to suffer?
2. Uncertainty about the government regulatory environment.
Many CEOs complain about the unceasing and accelerating growth of regulations at the local, state, and federal level. They perceive the federal government as generally unfriendly towards business and business success.
3. Uncertainty about the minute-to-minute volatility of their stock prices due to an erratic marketplace.
High-frequency, computer-driven operators cause problems in the marketplace. They make money at investors’ expense. They push stocks down to unreasonably low prices that have nothing to do with the fundamentals. They undermine confidence in the markets. The volatility they exacerbate is destroying investor confidence little by little. Such unchecked price manipulation will ultimately sabotage the value and respect of the U.S. markets.
The high-frequency traders are permitted to operate because they make money for the stock exchanges. We assume they must have political clout because the SEC has done nothing to stop their corrosive activity. Business leaders we speak to are uniformly concerned that the market mechanisms are breaking down, and that the regulators just don’t seem to care.
As we write this letter, world markets are completing another month of high volatility. That’s bad for investor confidence and bad for corporate growth. If you can’t approximately forecast your stock price or valuation of your company, how can you plan financing, expansion, acquisition, or growth strategies? You can’t or you can’t do it well.
Such volatility is also bad for retirees and owners of pension funds and other retirement accounts. How are companies to judge how their retirees will be compensated?
Today’s uncertainty is putting business leaders in double handcuffs. They are having a hard time making important decisions. Job creation in the private sector requires the ability of employers to forecast and plan. That isn’t happening. Add in the regulation burden and stock market volatility and it’s no wonder expansion plans are getting shunted not just to the back burner, but to the freezer. The economy is lousy and all this is just making it lousier.
News Media: Ratings Trump Meaning
It’s no secret that the news media tends to exaggerate and emphasize here- and-now stories, often at the expense of more significant and far-reaching developments. That’s the nature of the business they are in. It’s all about ratings and counting eyeballs, and, alas, entertaining the folks. The U.S. media continues to focus on events within the U.S., often ignoring many important developments and events.
We in no way wish to minimize the real pain and suffering that hurricane/tropical storm Irene caused and is still causing in some areas, but the media seems to have missed the story. They mobilized their camera crews on the coastline days in advance, and then lost interest once the storm moved inland. It seems to us that the media’s primary efforts were at creating dread in advance of the storm. Many people have been negatively impacted by this storm, and their process of recovery will be a lengthy one, but to the media, cleanup and repair just aren’t glamorous stories.
With some exceptions, the media in general (especially television) seems unable to decipher and present stories with real impact. They don’t report on them until it’s too late. They often focus reporting on relatively short-term or less significant events meant to satiate viewers’ desires for entertainment and instantly-gratifying information.
We generally eschew television as a source of knowledge. We read a lot but are extremely skeptical about what we read in the press. We have a limited number of preferred media sources. The list includes the Financial Times, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the Economist, Barrons, Bloomberg BusinessWeek, Forbes, and Investors Business Daily. We read news dailies from several countries as well as industry-specific publications. The latter provide us good information, for instance, on energy, basic materials, technology, gold, medical, and other areas of interest to us. In addition, we review a significant number of individual country, industry, and company-specific research reports.
Talking to people in the trenches of commerce and industry is very valuable. Each year, we speak with hundreds of company executives either face-to-face at conferences and road shows, while travelling the globe, or on conference calls.
Investing is a very serious business. We have learned to be extremely careful about our information sources and what we believe. We always consider the source. You should do so as well.
Europe Closer To A Major Financial Crisis
European banks were not helped by the speeches last weekend of European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde at the Jackson Hole conference of central bankers this past weekend.
Europe is in a major banking crisis. We’ve been following this shipwreck-in-the-making for many weeks now. Let us instead offer an excerpt from a report about a German court that may have a very big impact on the future of the Euro community, the Euro currency, and the European banking system.
Please click the following link to read the full article Euro bail-out in doubt as ‘hysteria’ sweeps Germany
Finally, Let Us Remind You That We Believe That The Europeans Will Do A Very Large QE To Solve This Problem
The QE will take place soon, and the stability of banks in Germany will be the reason that the German parliament will go along with the bail out and its long-term costs to the nation.
The QE is widely anticipated by the more sophisticated global investors, but others are still skeptical. It may cause a major market rally in many countries when it does take place. We believe that the world stock market rally of the last week is a prelude to what we could see when more people begin to realize that QE is coming from Europe.
The Venezuela Mess
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) recently announced that Venezuela may have more oil than any country in the world. Good news for Venezuela, you would think, but necessarily so. That’s because the oil is located beneath quite inhospitable jungles. It’s difficult and expensive bringing it to the surface. Moreover, the crude is heavy and tar- like and thus very expensive to handle, transport, and refine. All these confounders call for a whole lot more ability than the incompetent government of Hugo Chavez can muster.
Chavez may know how to run a Bolivarian Revolution, but he is terrible at running an economy. As a result, Venezuela’s economy suffers from very high inflation and low growth.
Venezuela’s significant other problems include the following:
a surplus of domestic currency that people believe will soon be devalued,
a shortage of available U.S. dollar currency that can be used to buy assets,
massive corruption, including the loss of 20 percent of the state oil company (PDVSA) pension fund to a Ponzi scheme fraudster connected to senior Venezuelan officials; $500 million was stolen,
overstated government economic production statistics.
While Venezuela has huge oil reserves, the country’s production performance is anything but great. Chavez has taken over many companies and installed his loyalists to run them just like he did years ago to the state-owned oil company. His pattern is to fire those who protest and replace them with people long on ideology and short on competence and willingness to work. Thus, Venezuela has lost much of its capable technical oil industry people and suffers from less-than- competent management at almost all of the state-owned companies.
Recently, Venezuela recalled most of its gold reserves stored in unfriendly countries. One possible rationale for repatriation of the gold is a desire to clandestinely sell some of it to finance Chavez’s give-away programs, including building 2 million houses for the poor. He previously asked the PDVSA to fund the housing project from profits, but because of mismanagement the oil company doesn’t have the profits to do so. Could Chavez secretly sell some gold to finance his give-aways without telling the people of Venezuela? It wouldn’t surprise us. He’ll do whatever to create support among the impoverished class and help himself stay in power. We are not concerned that his potential sales depressing gold prices. You can be that many countries would scramble to buy the gold if it reached the market.
The bottom line is this: despite its huge natural resources, Venezuela falls far short of making it to our buy list.
Gold Mining Stocks And A Global Stock Market Rally
In our opinion, growing mining gold stocks will be beneficiaries of higher stock markets. Recently gold mining stock prices are moving partly with gold and partly with the stock market.
The recent rally in world stock markets is due to a belief that Europe, including Germany, has no alternative other than to do more QE, so the next QE on a big scale will be from Europe. Recent events in Europe and remarks from ECB President Trichet and the German cabinet confirm this. Markets believe that more QE is coming from Japan and from U.S.; all of this flows into world investment markets.
As money flows into investment markets and bond yields remain low, some of that money finds its way into stocks. Stock money will flow to growing parts of the world India, China, Indonesia, and etc.
We have noticed lately that investment dollars from the developed world go first into dividend payers, and secondly it goes into natural resource investments that can grow their reserves with exploration such as oil, gold, and base metals. Thirdly it goes into growth companies that can export and sell to the growing parts of the world, such as construction and farm equipment makers, aircraft makers, food companies, raw material producers, high tech companies with new products, food retailers, entertainment companies and consumer brand names (as you know the Chinese love brand names).
Therefore, we expect gold and oil rich companies to attract capital and investors as the market look for alternatives to hedge their declining U.S. dollars. Small and medium sized resource companies with growing reserves and a stable operating environment are the companies to own. With respect to stable operating environments, the drug war in Mexico and the political backdrop in Venezuela make those areas more difficult. On the other hand, Thailand, Malaysia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Philippines, Australia, Canada, and other safer resource provinces are going to attract attention.
Our Recommendations
We currently hold cash and gold. We hold some high-yielding Canadian and U.S. oil-producing companies. We are nibbling at attractive investments as they come down to our buy points. We are selecting specific companies in India, Norway, US, Canada, and several other markets. We expect to see more opportunities with time.
Changes will be coming so stay tuned!

market commentary จาก Monty guild
1. อสังหาใน US และ European

Investor Risk Perceptions Shifting
A major shift in perception is spreading throughout the global investing community — from institutions to individuals.  Increasingly, investors are carefully weighing which countries’ bonds, stocks, and currencies are more risky or less risky?  The shift has gathered momentum since the end of June when the Fed stopped buying U.S. bonds under its second quantitative easing program, known as QE2 for short.
To better understand what’s going on, let’s step back to 2008, the year of historic financial and market blowups.  At that time, markets in emerging countries fell the most precipitously despite the fact that their economic fundamentals were superior to those of the larger, more developed countries. Worldwide investors perceived the traditional markets in Europe and the U.S., with longer histories of stability, as much safer than emerging markets.
No longer! That perception of stability has been eroding for years and now has pretty much been shaken to the core.
Globally, many observers — Guild Investment Management among them — have long pointed out the unwise fiscal behavior taking place in Europe and the U.S.  Finally, the investing community at large has grasped the degree of mismanagement at the highest levels in the developed world.  Country-specific fundamentals seem to be reasserting themselves.  Confidence, hard to win, can be easily lost, and is much harder to win back.
Recently, market volatility has driven some money out of equities and currencies into bonds as a short term alternative.  Longer term, we believe that a portion of the money will move into foreign currencies of faster-growing, medium-sized countries and into gold. Equity investors are starting to shun the U.S. and Europe, just as they have been shunning Japan for years. Over the long run, desertion from the dollar and euro will substantially elevate some currencies of smaller, faster-growing countries.
We have identified three levels of risk in the current market:
• Least risky
Emerging countries that are lenders to the developed world.
• Moderately risky
The once venerable U.S. is trading like a country in decline.
• Most risky
Western European nations that do not have the flexibility to lower the value of their currency by printing money (members of the Eurozone).
Eurozone = High Risk Zone
Several European countries recently banned short-selling of financial stocks. The U.S. did the same thing in the summer of calamitous 2008.   Financial stocks collapsed even further shortly afterward.
Expect to see a poorly re-engineered rerun with new actors but the same plot and the same ugly final act.  In the original, American taxpayers paid for the profligacy of bankers and politicians. Now European taxpayers will foot the bill.
The next few weeks will tell the tale.  So far we see some small movements from Italy to balance its budget in 2013.  We’ll see if the Italians are using the correct growth rates and the parliament agrees to what the ministers propose.
As the heads of the French and German government consult one another, they both realize that their constituents want neither a pan European debt market nor a larger European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF). This week the official debates about the EFSF get underway in the Netherlands and Dutch support for expanding the EFSF is far from guaranteed.
In our opinion, if European parliaments intend to pass an EFSF expansion that has a chance to be successful in saving sovereign debt markets and their banking systems, they should try to pass a fund that is in the 1.3 trillion Euro range rather than the proposed 440 billion fund.
Enter the Cash-Rich Chinese Bargain Hunters
You may be wondering what is happening in China during all the fiscal drama in the West.  To be sure, the Chinese have their own internal challenges, but we believe the situation is containable at the present time.
The Chinese economy suffers from high inflation and a still undervalued Yuan even though the government has been letting its currency rise in recent months. Fixed investment is too high a percentage of the GDP. To address this problem Beijing is encouraging prosperous citizens and companies to begin a long-term program of investing abroad. The Chinese are smart investors and they know a bargain when they see one, so we expect this activity to manifest in a number of ways:
● a wave of Chinese money headed for the U.S. and European real estate markets. Indeed, Chinese real estate investors are already on a spending spree in New York.
● a continued flow of money into world commodities markets.
● exploitation of the current market decline by purchasing U.S. stocks.
● far less investment in the U.S. bond market. The Chinese will be net sellers of U.S. dollar denominated treasuries as they diversify their huge foreign exchange portfolio.

Hoenig Retiring from the Fed
Thomas Hoenig, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, is retiring soon as he reaches the mandatory retirement age.  For more than a decade, Mr. Hoenig repeatedly called for the breakup of the large banks that were “too big to succeed.”  Had his voice been heeded, the crisis of 2008 would have been much less devastating to the U.S. and world economies. As he told Gretchen Morgenson of the New York Times recently, “extremely powerful financial institutions, both financially and politically, undermine the long-term strength of our system and make us look like a financial oligarchy.”
Excessive risk was taken on by American banks in the years leading up to 2008. Clearly the influence of the financial industry and the lack of wisdom by many in the U.S. Congress — for instance, those who voted to extend loans through Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to borrowers with low odds of repaying them — are big reasons why this happened.  Taxpayers have been paying the bills ever since for the over-speculation, and that’s a travesty.
Mr. Hoenig’s voice will be missed.
Job Growth That is Hurting The U.S. Economy
An article by John Merlene in this past Tuesday’s Investor’s Business Daily discusses the rapid growth in employment among federal government regulatory agencies in recent years.
The article says that while the U.S. private sector employment shrank 5.6%, federal regulatory agencies have seen their combined budgets grow a healthy 16%, and their employment rolls are up 13%.
What are all these new employees doing?  The article says they have been churning out new rules.  The Federal Register, a proxy of regulatory activity, saw its page number grow by 18% in 2010 alone.  According to the article, 379 new rules were imposed last month alone…and another 4,200 are in the pipeline.
This is weighing heavily on the U.S. economy, and hurting its competitiveness.  Business owners see an increasing regulatory burden as a deterrent to starting new businesses, expanding, and hiring employees.
The reality is that business owners and entrepreneurs have better chance to create long-term employment opportunities than does the government.  However, apparently some in government have a different viewpoint.  The article ends with a quote from an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) document this past February stating that “in periods of high unemployment, an increase in labor demand due to regulation may have a stimulative effect that results in a net increase in overall employment.”
A net increase in overall employment?  Really?
Our Current Positions and Recommendations
Cash Balances
Guild Investment Management, Inc., is holding a large allocation of cash.  We have avoided the suffering of the past two weeks and will have ample funds available as stocks, currencies, commodities, gold, and other attractive options fall into good buy ranges.
Gold
Long-term holders of gold concerned about political upheaval should continue to hold their core positions. Those who prefer to trade gold should take partial profits on spikes, but remember to also buy the dips.
Currencies
Use any strength in the dollar to purchase currencies of better-managed countries.
Stocks
Keep a close eye on world markets. Much uncertainty and volatility exist.  We expect a huge quantitative easing and bond-buying program to be instituted in the next few months by Europe, Japan, and the U.S. jointly.  China may also join in. This development will signal to us a big move up in gold, stocks, oil, commodities and other investment areas that benefit from inflation.
